چکیده

This paper reviews some of the advances that have been made in stress analyses of cracked aircraft components, in the understanding of the fatigue and fatigue-crack growth process, and in the prediction of residual strength of complex aircraft structures with widespread fatigue damage. Finite-element analyses of cracked structures are now used to determine accurate stress-intensity factors for cracks at structural details. Observations of small-crack behavior at open and rivet-loaded holes and the development of small-crack theory has lead to the prediction of stress-life behavior for components with stress concentrations under aircraft spectrum loading. Fatigue-crack growth under simulated aircraft spectra can now be predicted with the crackclosure concept. Residual strength of cracked panels with severe outof-plane deformations (buckling) in the presence of stiffeners and multiple-site damage can be predicted with advanced elastic-plastic finite-element analyses and the critical crack-tip-opening angle (CTOA) fracture criterion. These advances are helping to assure continued safety of aircraft structures.

Fatigue Life Prediction of Rivet Joints

Strength reduction in structures like an aircraft could be resulted as cyclic loads over a period of time and is an important factor for structural life prediction. Service loads are emphasized at the regions of stress concentration, mostly at the connection of components. The initial flaw prompting the service life was expected by using the Equivalent Initial Flaw Size (EIFS) which has been re...

Degree of Bending (DoB) in Tubular KT-Joints of Jacket Structures Subjected to Axial Loads

The fatigue life of tubular joints commonly found in offshore industry is not only dependent on the value of Hot-spot stress (HSS), but is also significantly influenced by the through-the-thickness stress distribution characterized by the degree of bending (DoB). The determination of DoB values in a tubular joint is essential for improving the accuracy of fatigue life estimation using the stres...

Methodology for Predicting the Onset of Widespread Fatigue Damage in Lap-Splice Joints

NASA has conducted an Airframe Structural Integrity Program to develop the methodology to predict the onset of widespread fatigue damage in lap-splice joints of fuselage structures. Several stress analysis codes have been developed or enhanced to analyze the lap-splice-joint configuration. Fatigue lives in lap-splicejoint specimens and fatigue-crack growth in a structural fatigue test article a...

A development in the finite volume method for the crack growth analysis without global remeshing

Crack growth analysis has remained one of the challenging problems in the fracture mechanics of structures. On the other hand, the fatigue crack growth is a common phenomenon in the components of structures like airplanes, navies and fluid storages where the fracture due to crack should be considered in the design of these structures. In this paper, the finite volume method (FVM) is extended fo...

Fracture mechanics-based life prediction of a riveted lap joint

In this paper, three-dimensional modeling of the fatigue crack growth profiles was performed in a simple riveted lap joint. Simulation results showed that mode I was dominated on the one side of the plates and the crack straightly grew on this side, while the other side of the plates was in a mixed-mode condition and the crack propagation path was not straight on this side. Afterward, the fract...
